High Potential and Gifted Education

At Yennora Public School, we believe every child has strengths and the ability to achieve great things. Some students show high potential in learning, creativity, leadership or physical skills. HPGE helps us identify and support these students so they can learn, grow and reach their personal best.

We welcome and value the many cultures and languages in our community, and we work closely with families to understand each child’s strengths.

Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

Recognising potential and developing talent

Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.

Tailored lessons

Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.

Rich opportunities and activities

Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.

Opening doors to wider experiences

Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom

Teachers at Yennora support high potential learners through everyday teaching practices, including:

  • Differentiated learning activities that adjust pace, complexity and challenge so students can think deeply and move ahead when they’re ready.
  • Ongoing formative assessment so teachers can monitor progress, celebrate growth and respond quickly to each child’s needs.
  • Explicit teaching of critical thinking and problem-solving, helping students analyse, question, create and explore ideas in meaningful ways.
  • Learning tasks with choice and relevance, including creative, hands-on and cross-curricular projects that connect to students' interests and cultures.
  • Differentiated movement and skill development in PDHPE, allowing students to refine skills and progress at their own level.
  • Opportunities to lead in physical activities, demonstrations and team strategy to build confidence and teamwork.
  • Supportive classroom environments where students are encouraged to explore ideas, reflect on their learning and show what they know in different ways.
  • Strengths-based feedback and personalised goal setting that help students understand their next steps and take pride in their progress.
  • Leadership opportunities within the classroom, including assisting peers, leading group discussions or taking on responsibilities that build confidence.
  • Structured collaboration and peer reflection, where students share ideas, learn from each other and think together.
  • A safe, caring learning environment that encourages curiosity, positive risk-taking, perseverance and a love of learning.

These strategies help every student learn at their own pace and build on their strengths.

  • The Premier’s Spelling Bee promotes our students’ vocabulary development and attention to detail in competitive settings.
  • The Premier’s Debating Challenge helps our students to build logical arguments and confidence in public speaking.
  • The Premier’s Sporting Challenge (PSC) promotes whole-school participation in physical activity with leadership pathways and professional learning.

If you think your child may be showing strong skills or high potential in any area, please contact the school. We are always happy to work with families to support each child’s learning journey.
